Gluten Free Chocolat Orange Cupcakes

These cupcakes are beyond good!  If you are craving a moist, chocolaty, decadent but easy dessert, look no further than this recipe.  I made these cupcakes for Thanksgiving and my entire gluten-eating family raved about them!  The addition of buttermilk and sour cream helps make the cupcake moist beyond belief.  The hint of orange brings another flavor level to your basic chocolate cupcake.  Be forewarned, these cupcakes are so darn good you probably won’t want to share!

Gluten Free Chocolate Orange Cupcakes

1 box Betty Crocker GF Devil’s Food Cake Mix
1 cup buttermilk
1 stick butter (1/2 cup), softened
3 eggs
1 cup orange juice
1 cup sour cream
1 4-ounce packet of instant chocolate pudding mix
orange zest

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Beat cake mix, buttermilk, butter, eggs, orange juice, sour cream, chocolate pudding mix, and orange zest in a large bowl on low speed for 30 seconds, then on medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally.   Pour into prepared cupcake pan (filling 2/3 way).   Bake for 18 – 23 minutes (until wooden toothpick inserted into center of cupcake comes out clean).  Cool completely before frosting.  Makes approximately two dozen cupcakes.

Orange Cream Cheese Icing

1 16-ounce can Betty Crocker cream cheese icing
1 8-ounce block of cream cheese, softened
2 teaspoons orange juice
1/2 teaspoon orange extract
orange zest

Using an electric mixer, blend icing, cream cheese, orange juice, orange extract, and orange zest until thoroughly combined.

  1. Sounds delish! I do one with the Betty Crocker Chocolate cake mix and icing. I use PB2 (find it on the web at Amazon). PB2 is a powdered organic peanut butter with 75% less fat but all the flavor. As it is powdered peanut butter it mixes in the icing perfectly. Chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter icing – it’s like a Reece’s cup!
    I wil be trying the chocolate orange as that is another flavor combination that is on my list of favorites!

  2. These look decadent! I love using orange oil and lemon oil too in lieu of vanilla. With my oldest son’s corn intolerance, we have to make the vanilla homemade or do without it. I just went to a cooking demo at a local GIG chapter. They talked about using Earth Balance in lieu of butter for frosting. Everyone raved about how well it works as a substitute. I haven’t tried it yet. It is a pity there is no good substitute for cream cheese though. That is may absolutely fav frosting. But my little guy has to stay away from the dairy, too. Your cupcakes look gorgeous, by the way.

  3. Help! I attempted to make these cupcakes last night and they fell after I took them out of the oven. I also seems like they didn’t cook all the way inside and I even cooked them at least 10 minutes then the recipe calls for. Any suggestions? I’m not sure what went wrong.

  8. Mmmmm these do look delicious. I am wondering if I can substitute the egg as I cant tolerate eggs either. I have a good pea protein product so I will try it and let you know the outcome.

    Re those people who are dairy intolerant – you can get a range of lactose reduced dairy foods to use in this recipe.

    I have also used digestive enzymes just before I eat. I know from personal experience this can help a lot.

  10. Wow, your cupcakes look amazing and the recipe looks like it is not very hard also. The sprinkles on top make the cup cakes look like they could be served at a wedding or even a baby shower…
